In Edam, you can take a special boat tour. Starting point is the beautiful and atmospheric Hotel-Café De Harmonie on Voorhaven 92. Download your map here.
From here, you will calmly sail away towards the Markermeer. At the oude Zeesluis, turn around and continue under the Kettingbrug bridge, up the Nieuwehaven. You are not allowed to take the boat into the IJsselmeer.
Cruise along the Nieuwe Haven past monumental buildings and cheese warehouses, where cheese is still ripening on the shelves!
Via two low bridges (just bend over) you reach shipyard Groot, the nautical heart of Edam for over four hundred years.
Past teahouses and beautiful mayor's houses, you will find the next turning point at the former Tram Bridge, once terminus of the tram that connected Edam to Amsterdam.
Now the route turns left at the aforementioned shipyard, across the Boerenverdriet. A little piece of ‘Bruges in North Holland’! The narrow waterway brings you to the centre of Edam.
under Dam Square and past the old town hall, post office and one of the Netherlands' oldest stone merchant's houses. You then head back towards De Harmonie where - one hour after departure - you will arrive at the place where you started. A drink and snack may be waiting on the cosy terrace of this ancient café.
